On April 27, 2003, Research.com released the 2nd edition of our annual report on the best scientists in the field of immunology. The list is our way of helping increase the visibility of scientists and professionals making contributions to the academic community through their research projects.

Another important goal of the report is to make it easier for students, organizations, and decision-makers to find and connect with top researchers and experts in immunology. With our ranking of the best immunology scientists, anyone can learn about a scientist and their research interests, and find mentors or experts they can collaborate with on their projects.

For the 2023 edition of the ranking, our research team looked through more than 8,600 scientist profiles on OpenAlex, CrossRef, and other bibliometric sources. We examined each scientist's professional background and used several criteria to determine if they would make it to our ranking.

To be considered for ranking as a top scientist, scholars who have mostly published in immunology must have a D-index score of at least 40. The criteria for inclusion in the ranking take into account the D-index score, the proportion of contributions made in the relevant discipline, as well as the scientist's awards and achievements.

Latest discoveries in immunology research

Scientists have made several recent discoveries that are helping advance the field of Immunology. One such discovery is the link between immune system cells in the gut and stress-induced depression. This connection highlights the complex interplay between the gut microbiome and the brain, which can have significant implications for mental health.

  • Scientists affiliated with universities and institutions in the United States dominate the list. U.S.-based scientists in immunology total 534 or 53.4% of the entire immunology scientists ranking.
  • Moreover, 7 out of 10 scientists in the top 1% are from the United States.
  • In our 2023 report, the U.S. National Institutes of Health is the institution with the highest number of scientists in the ranking. It has 38 scientists affiliated with that institution.
  • Shizuo Akira from Osaka University retains his top spot in the ranking with a D-index of 286.
  • The top 10 universities and institutions leading research in the field of immunology are all found in the U.S.
  • The average D-index for the top 1% of scientists is 211.9 against an average of 103.88 for all scientists included in the ranking.

Scientists from the United States dominate the list with 534 scientists, or five fewer scientists than in 2022, representing 53.9% of the whole ranking. Seven out of 10 scientists in the top 1% included in our report are affiliated with U.S.-based universities and institutions.

The United Kingdom ranks second with 87 scientists. The U.K. was also last year's second-placer.

Germany, which currently has 63 ranking scientists, takes third place. The country has significantly increased its scientists from last year's count of 55.

The other leading countries are France with 36 scientists, the Netherlands with 36, Italy with 33 scientists, and Japan with 32.

Please note that the country associated with a scientist is based on their affiliated research institution according to MAG, not on their actual nationality.

Institutions with the highest number of leading scientists

In the 2023 edition of our report, the U.S. National Institutes of Health is the leading institution with 38 scientists. Though NIH is still number one, its scientist pool has shrunk from last year's 69 scientists in our ranking.

Ranking second is Harvard University, with 33 scientists. Harvard also retains its position from the previous year.

In the third spot is the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. NIAID, which has made significant contributions to new therapies, vaccines, and diagnostic tests, has 27 scientists.

The top 10 universities and institutions leading research in the field of immunology are all found in the U.S.

Institutions outside the U.S. that made it to our top 20 are the University of Zurich and Karolinska Institute. Both have 12 scientists in our ranking.

In Asia, Professor Shizuo Akira from Osaka University, Japan is on top of the leading scientist. Professor Shizuo is also the top scientist in our report, with a D-index of 286.

In North America, Professor Richard A. Flavell from Yale University, United States, ranks first in the region. Professor Flavell is second in the world ranking with a D-index of 236.

In Europe, Professor Alberto Mantovani from Humanitas University, Italy, is the top scientist. He ranks number 5 in the world with a D-index of 204.

In Oceania, Professor Mark J. Smyth from the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, Australia, is the leading scientist. He is also the 23rd scientist in the world, ranking with a D-index of 169.

Fernando Q. Cunha from Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, is the highest-ranking scientist from South America with a world ranking of 355 and a D-index of 104.

Professor Shabir A. Madhi, who is affiliated with the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, is the first in Africa with a world ranking of 672 and a D-index of 89.

The average D-index for the top 1% of scientists is 211.9 against an average of 103.88 for all scientists included in the ranking.

The scholar with the lowest index value who made it to the ranking in 2023 has a D-index of 80.

The average number of published articles for the top 1% of scientists in the ranking is 902.3 against an average of 404.79 for all scholars.

The average number of citations for the top 1% of scientists is 197, 189.6 against an average of 45, 437.38 for all scholars.
