On May 26, 2023, Research.com released the second edition of the best biology and biochemistry scientists. Our report aims to contribute to increasing the online visibility of researchers and academics working in this field and to highlight some of the latest research discoveries in biology and biochemistry.

Moreover, the report helps students, businesses, government agencies, and other stakeholders easily find scientists they can network with for their own projects and initiatives. With the list of top-ranking scientists, researchers can know more about the topics other scientists are working on, establish collaboration, and contribute to advancing research and scientific knowledge in biology and biochemistry.

To create the 2023 report, our team of researchers implemented modern research and analytics tools to go through more than 18,200 scientists' profiles from sources such as OpenAlex and CrossRef, as well as other bibliometric databases. In our analysis, we set specific criteria to guide us in deciding which scientist will be included in the ranking. The criteria included the number of published research works by the scientist, awards in the field, and other achievements in their careers as biology and biochemistry scientists.

Additionally, the scientist profiles considered for the ranking had a D-index score of at least 40 and had been published primarily in journals and publications focused on biology and biochemistry research.

  • Guido Kroemer from Sorbonne University, France, retains his number one position from last year's report with a D-index of 272.
  • In 2023, Harvard University also stays at the top of the ranking among institutions with the highest number of leading scientists. The university has a total of 63 scholars included in the top 1,000.
  • The average D-index for the top 1% of scientists is 243.1, against an average of 124.52 for all 1,000 scientists included in the ranking.

Harvard University is the top institution hosting the most number of biology and biochemistry scientists. The university has 63 affiliated scientists included in our 2023 ranking, up from 56 scholars last year.

It is followed by the University of California, San Diego with 27, the University of California, San Francisco with 26, the National Institutes of Health with 25, and Stanford University with 24, with only the NIH seeing an increase in the number of scholars this year.

Other institutions that made it into the top 10 are the Max Planck Society (20 scientists), Scripps Research Institute (19), The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (16), MIT (15), and the University of Washington (14).

American universities and institutions constitute 80% of the top 20 leading institutions, with the remaining 20% represented by institutions in Germany (Max Planck Society) and Japan (University of Tokyo).

Shuh Narumiya from Kyoto University, Japan, leads the top scholars in Asia and ranks 83rd, with a D-index of 160.

Meanwhile, Michael R. Hamblin from the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, is the highest-ranking scholar in Africa this year with a D-index of 137.
