by Imed Bouchrika, Phd

Co-Founder and Chief Data Scientist

On May 17, 2003, Research.com released the second edition of our report on the best political scientists. Our report aims to promote recognition and attention to the groundbreaking research of leading scholars in this field. By doing so, we hope to increase the visibility of these scientists within the academic community.

This year's report comes on the heels of our 2022 Law and Political Science report. For 2023, we have decided to split the two disciplines, the better to assist researchers, policymakers, and business leaders worldwide in identifying leading political science scholars to collaborate with on their research projects. Our list of leading researchers can serve as a starting point where you can find top experts in various political science research topics across different countries, academic institutions, and research centers.

To create the 2023 report, Research.com examined more than 1,300 profiles from sources such as OpenAlex and CrossRef, as well as other bibliometric databases. Our team used several metrics to evaluate the profiles, including the percentage of contributions made in the relevant field, notable awards, and achievements.

Additionally, the scholars considered for the ranking had a D-index score of at least 40 and had published primarily on political science topics.

Latest discoveries in political science research

Political science scholars around the world are conducting research that sheds light on how politics and government work. Some of these studies include the role of social media in political polarization and how gender and race intersect in political representation and policy outcomes.

Studies have shown that social media has played an instrumental role in creating more political and social awareness among citizens. However, social media can also contribute to political polarization by creating “echo chambers" that insulate people from opposing views.

Meanwhile, research has shown that the race and gender of elected representatives influence the ways by which they legislate. These factors could also impact who gets elected, as well as who is represented, and what issues elected representatives prioritize.

Regarding technology use in the field of political science and governance, artificial intelligence is being used as a tool to help governments decide whether or not to bail out a bank in crisis. Research conducted by the University College London and the Queen Mary University of London uses AI to assess optimal bailout strategies, how much should be invested in the bank, and which bank or banks should be bailed out at any given time.
