World Online Ranking of Best Microbiology Scientists – 2023 Report
On April 27, 2003, Research.com released the second edition of our annual report on the best scientists in the field of microbiology. The primary objective of this list is to increase awareness and recognition within the academic world of the significant research accomplishments of microbiology's top researchers and scientists.
Additionally, we hope the report will motivate researchers, decision-makers, and entrepreneurs worldwide to explore the different research topics leading scientists in microbiology are conducting. Our report offers a means of acquiring information on the top experts in diverse microbiology research domains across nations, universities, and research institutions.
To compile the scientists for our 2023 report, our research team examined more than 43,000 profiles of scientists on OpenAlex, CrossRef, and other bibliometric sources. We used several indicators to determine the eligibility of each scientist. These included the scientist's publications, awards, and achievements. To be included in our ranking, a scientist's D-index threshold was established at 40 if the majority of their publications were in the field of microbiology.

Scientists from the United States make up 45.4% of our ranking, or 454 scientists, up by 13 scientists compared to 2022. Four out of 10 scientists in the top 1% included in our report are affiliated with U.S.-based universities and institutions.
The United Kingdom ranks second with 89 scientists, a spot it kept from last year, while France, which hosts the top scientist this year as last year, kept its third place from 2022. This year, however, Germany catches up with France for a tie in the third place with 56 scientists apiece.
The Netherlands takes the fourth position in the top 10 with 50 scientists. Australia, Canada, and Japan follow in the fifth, sixth, and seventh places with 31, 29, and 28 scientists, respectively.
Spain and Switzerland round up the top 10 with 28 and 24 scientists, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention comes in second place with 20 scientists included in our ranking.
Harvard University takes the third spot with 16 scientists. Johns Hopkins University and Institut Pasteur are tied at number four on the top 10 institutions, with 13 scientists each.
The rest of the top 10 institutions represent North America, Europe, and Asia. These include the University of Oxford, the University of Hong Kong, Utrecht University, the University of Washington, Université Paris Cité, Aix-Marseille University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
