World Online Ranking of Best Mathematics Scientists – 2023 Report
On March 14, 2023, Research.com published the second edition of the annual ranking of best scientists in the area of mathematics. This report, which presents a list of leading scholars is intended to provide the academic community with information on the most influential researchers and their contributions to the advancement of mathematics.
In releasing this annual ranking, we hope that more researchers, decision-makers, and entrepreneurs around the world will be inspired to follow where leading experts are creating new paths. It is a great opportunity for all of us to learn from this report who are the leading experts in different research areas, in different countries, as well as within different universities and research institutions.
For the 2023 edition of the ranking, more than 6,200 scientist profiles from various bibliometric sources have been examined with several indicators and metrics reviewed in order to consider each scientist’s inclusion in the ranking.
The D-index (Discipline h-index) threshold for approving a scholar to be considered was set to 30 if most of their publications were in the field of mathematics. To be considered for this ranking, the inclusion criteria for scholars are based on the discipline h-index, the proportion of contributions made within the given discipline, and the awards and achievements of the scientists.

- Scholars from the United States lead the ranking with 469 scientists representing 46.9% of all leading mathematics scientists. The other countries with leading positions in the ranking are the United Kingdom (71 scientists or 7.1%), Germany (55 scientists or 5.5%), France (49 scientists or 4.9%), China (49 scientists or 4.9%), Canada (39 scientists or 3.9%), and Italy (29 scientists or 2.9%).

- The number 1 position in the ranking is held by Jerrold E. Marsden from the California Institute of Technology, who has an h-index of 127.

Countries with the highest number of leading mathematics scientists
Scientists from the United States dominate the list with 469 scholars included in 2022, which represents 46.9% of the whole ranking. Six out of 10 scientists in the top 1% are from the U.S., two scientists are from France, and one each is from Canada and Turkey.
The U.K. ranks second with 71 scientists.
The third spot was taken by Germany, which currently has 55 ranking scientists.
The other leading countries are France and China with 49 scientists each, Canada with 39 scientists, and Italy with 29 scholars.
The U.S. gained 11 more scientists in 2023, from 458 in 2022 to 469 in 2023. Scientists from the U.K. also increased, from 63 in 2022 to 71 in 2023.
From having 60 scientists in 2022, the total for Germany decreased in 2023 to 55 scientists. Similarly, the total number of scientists from Australia who made it to the ranking decreased from 28 in 2022 to 25 in 2023.

Institutions with the highest number of leading scientists
In the 2023 edition of our ranking, the leading institution is the University of California-Berkeley, with 27 scientists included in the ranking. Ranking second is Stanford University with 23 scientists, while Princeton University ranks third with 23 scholars as well.
From having 21 scientists in 2022, the University of California-Berkeley added six more scientists to the ranking, making the total 27 for 2023. One scientist was added to Princeton University. while Stanford University added three more scientists.
American universities constitute 90% of the top 10 leading institutions with the University of Oxford in the 9th spot as the only non-American institution.
Six out of 10 institutions in the top 1% of the ranking are based in the U.S., the other four are the Federal University of Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées in France (ranked 3rd), HEC Montréal in Canada (ranked 4th), Paul Sabatier University also in France (ranked 7th), and Çankaya University in Turkey (ranked 10th).
The only two institutions with more than one representative in the top 1% of the ranking are the California Institute of Technology (2 scholars) and the University of California, Los Angeles (2 scholars).
In 2023, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in New York and Rutgers University in New Jersey made it to the top 10 institutions with the highest number of affiliated ranked scientists.
Among 20 leading institutions, 17 are universities based in the U.S., while the other three are based in Switzerland (ETH Zurich), the U.K. (University of Oxford), and Austria (University of Vienna).
